Who Are Your Baby’s Favorite Bands?

No, I’m not talking about The Wiggles or The Doodle Bops, or any of those Playhouse Disney/Nick Jr. made-for-kids bands. I’m talking about the real thing, the kind of band whose CD an adult, without children, would buy and play in their car with the windows rolled down without fear or embarrassment. Let me explain…

One night, when our son was about 3 months old, he sat, strapped into his bouncy seat, with me in my office as I took care of some work. At the same time, I had iTunes playing Fountains of Wayne, and after about 3 songs, noticed that Owen was out cold, and he remained asleep for quite a while. What made this even more unusual is that, if you Owen at that age, you would know he never slept during the day, nor did he ever seem to need to… all action, all the time.

Curious, my wife and I placed him in similar situations over the next few weeks, and sure enough, when a position where he could relax (laying down, sitting in a seat, etc) and the mellow 4-4 rhythm hit his ears, the snoring started. We tried other music, the Baby Bach, Mozart, etc lullabies, and so on, but nothing had the same effect.

For some reason though, we never really thought to use this little nuance to our advantage, until now.

For months now we have been at our wits end, trying every way we could think of to get Owen to fall asleep and stay asleep. We just can’t deal with him getting up anymore every 2 hours or so. So we’ve called in the big guns. I recently burned a CD for him, of some of the nice, mellow, 4-4 time songs in my iTunes library that he likes, and play it for him when we put him down to sleep.

Here’s the lineup:

  1. Apple Candy - Ben Lee
  2. Life Will Go On - Chris Isaak
  3. 405 (Acoustic) - Death Cab for Cutie
  4. Settle For A Slowdown - Dierks Bentley
  5. Your Song - Elton John
  6. Hackensack - Fountains of Wayne
  7. Either Way - Guster
  8. My Sundown - Jimmy Eat World
  9. Gone To The Movies - Semisonic
  10. Chocolate - Snow Patrol
  11. Come A Little Closer Baby - Dierks Bentley
  12. For Me This Is Heaven - Jimmy Eat World
  13. Valley Winter Song - Fountains of Wayne
  14. Angel - Matt Nathanson
  15. I Can’t Help Falling In Love With You - Elvis Presley
  16. Begin - Ben Lee

So… who are your baby’s favorite bands?

Great stuff! First of all, we have a 17 month old boy, who still wakes up at night. In fact yesterday I went to bed at midnight and then woke up at 3, 4, 5, 6 and finaly 7:20 am. I remember one of my friends called me after having her baby and asking me for advice on how to get her 4 month old who apperently slept from 8pm to 5 am, to sleep through the night. I thought she was joking and felt useless…
Also, regarding the our son’s favorite band is Beatles. We it is because when I was pregnant, I listen to it all the time. Now, everytime we go on the trip we have to have CD with “Greatest Hits”.
Works everytime. Even when he is fussy, or hungry, we put it on and it’s magic :-) .
Like they say “All you need is Love..”.
Anyway, it has been great to see other designers work. Good luck. Katya.

My 2 1/2 year-old daughter and I have a 45 minute drive just about every morning. Lately, she’s been requesting “The Happy Phantom” by Tori Amos. She is also loves the “O Brother Where Art Thou” soundtrack, bluegrass is her thing.
